Membership in the Society of the War of 1812 offers an opportunity for recognition of these early patriots. The insignia of the Society may be worn by members on occasions of ceremony and officers and enlisted men of the branches of the military pursuant to provisions of the Act of Congress of September 25, 1890.
Any male person, aged 21 or over, of good moral character and reputation, who is a lineal descendant of one who served between June 19, 1812 and February 18, 1815 in the army, navy, marine corps or voluntary service of the United States; or as a member of the ship’s company on any public armed vessel of the United States or any vessel sailing under letters of marque and reprisal issued by the United States; or in the militia of any state or territory or the District of Columbia called out for service against an armed enemy or for coast or border defense; or in the forces of the United States in the Battle of Tippecanoe, is eligible for membership.
In case of failure of lineal descendants of a participant in the WAR, one collateral descendant may be considered for admission to represent the patriot. Every application must be filed in duplicate using the Society application forms, accompanied by a check covering the admission fee and the first year’s dues. Life membership is also available. Complete documentation for each generation in the line of descent and the service of the 1812 ancestor is required. While the Society does not offer genealogical research services, assistance will be given wherever possible. Ladies who descend from veterans of the War of 1812 may be interested in inquiring about the National Society of the United States Daughters of 1812.
